The Truth about Jesus' Bride: The Doctrine of the Church

Matthew 16:18

Full Service

The Church is what Jesus is doing; we need to get in on it and do it right.

“We believe a New Testament Church is a community of baptized believers voluntarily associated for the ministry of God’s Word and prayer; the observance of the ordinances of Baptism (immersion) and the Lord's Supper; for mutual edification and care; for the advancement of the Gospel to the ends of the earth; and whose leadership consists of pastors (elders) and deacons.”

Calvary Baptist Church Statement of Faith

Of Scriptural certainty; the church is …

A called out confessing community commissioned to obey Christ’s commands.

1. Called out (ekklesia) … to worship the King

(Matt. 16:18; Jn. 15:16-19; Heb. 1:1f)

God is calling out of the world the final kingdom citizens by baptizing them with the Holy Spirit into Christ (Acts. 2:1-4, 38-41; 1 Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:26, 27; Rom. 6:3-7).

“Added”

2. Confessing … to confirm the King (Matt. 16:16; Jn. 20:31; Rom. 10:9-13; Eph. 3:10)

- Jesus is the Christ

- Make known the manifold wisdom of God

- Obedient to ceremony to testify to spiritual reality

- Believer Baptism (Matt. 28:19; Acts 2:41; 8:36; 10:47-48)

- Lord’s Table (Lk. 22:19-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25)

3. Community … to conform to the King

(Acts 2:42-47; 14:27; Eph. 4:11-12; Heb. 3:12-14; 10:24, 25; 1 Cor. 12:14f)

Christ didn’t save us for ourselves; he saved us for himself and his family.

Structured connecting and gathering for courage and growth (1 Cor. 6:19-20; 12:7, 27; 1 Tim 3:1f).

4. Commissioned to obey Christ’s commands … to call people to the King

(Matt. 28:19, 20; Jn. 8:31, 32; 10:4, 5; 14:15; 17:17; Eph. 2:10; Phil. 1:27; Col. 1:27-28; 4:5-6; 1 Pet. 3:15)

Christ, not tradition is the Head, sustaining all things by his powerful word (Eph. 1:22-23; Col. 1:18; Heb. 1:3).

The church is what Jesus is doing.
