The Marks of Genuine Love: Love in Deed and Truth
1 John 3:11-24
Main truth: Because Jesus laid down His life for us, we are called to lay down our lives for one another.
Jesus’ sacrifice shapes our love.
1. A Changed Heart: Love Replaces Hatred — 1 John 3:11–15
- What does life in God’s family look like in our relationships?
- John shows us what love must reject before showing us what love must become.
“Another person’s faithfulness can become something we resent because it confronts our own unwillingness to obey.”
The people who belong to Jesus become people we are learning to love.
We do not love our way into new life. We love because Christ has given us new life.
Examine your heart: Whose success do I resent? Is there someone whose good I struggle to welcome? What would repentance look like in that relationship?
2. An Open Hand: Love Gives at a Cost — 1 John 3:16–18
Love becomes visible when someone accepts a cost for another person’s good.
Christ laid down His life for us; therefore, we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. John’s word carries an obligation. Having received this love, we are called to live in a way shaped by it. His grace gives us both the reason and the pattern.
Danger: the person has resources, sees the need, and shuts the heart.
John’s question is searching: how does God’s love abide in the person who responds that way?
Consider: Three questions that arise directly from verse 17: What has God placed in my hands? Whose need has He placed before my eyes? Where am I closing my heart?
3. A Reassured Heart: Love Strengthens Confidence Before God — 1 John 3:19–22
“Love taking shape in our lives provides evidence that the truth we profess is producing fruit.”
We need to distinguish between recognizing actual sin and concluding that every failure proves the absence of grace.
Your heart can bring an accusation; God has the final word. We need to hear His Word clearly rather than treat the strength of our feelings as the measure of truth.
“A tender conscience can sometimes acknowledge every remaining weed while refusing to see any growing fruit.”
Consider: Where do I need to confess sin? Where can I thank God for changing me?
4. An Abiding Life: Love Flows from Belonging to Christ — 1 John 3:23–24
- Where do we look for the life and strength to obey?
“Faith has a definite object. We place our faith in Jesus Christ, and that faith becomes visible in the way we love one another.”
John gives us his final statement about knowing: we know He abides in us through the Spirit He has given us.
The God who commands us to love gives His Spirit to His people.
- A changed heart refuses to give resentment a home.
- An open hand responds to the need.
- A reassured heart comes honestly before God.
- An abiding life depends on Christ and the Spirit He has given.
