The Man in Darkness Encounters the Man of Light

John 9:1-41

Full Service

...so that the works of God might be manifested in him...as long as it is day. (Jn. 9:3,4 LSB)

As Jesus is leaving the Feast of Tabernacles lamp-lighting ceremony, the “light of the world” meets a man living in darkness—we learn double darkness. One darkness is regrettable; the other is fatal.

Are you blind?

Is this about sin?

Is this about healing?

Is this about Jesus?

This is a mercy transaction as a “sign” that the Messiah is among them.

Is this about salvation?

This man was made to be saved—to receive the works of God, and made the way he was for that salvation to take place.

This is about how salvation happens.
- He couldn’t see
- He couldn’t see that Jesus could see him
- He couldn’t seek Jesus
- He couldn’t find Jesus
- He couldn’t pay for help

This is about the ones salvation often tragically passes by.

- Crowd--don’t believe in a holy visit
- Religious, self-righteous--don’t want to see what they see
- Parents--embittered because of their shame and afraid of more

This is about to whom salvation happens.

- Who is He that I may believe in Him

- Lord, I believe, and he worshipped Him

“Are we blind too?”

The worst situation is those who can “see”, fully understand what is being put forth by Jesus, and willingly reject it. “if you were “blind”, you would not be guilty of sin; but now you claim you can see, your guilt remains.” (41)
