Taste and See that the Lord is Good
The Glory of Jesus on Display
John 2:1-11
A miracle is “a supernatural act of God that glorifies Jesus” (Pastor Jared Wilson). It is a breakthrough into our current broken world of the kingdom yet to come (cf. Rev. 21:1-5ff); a “window into heaven” which gives us a glimpse of the world as it was meant to be and will one day be again.
In the miracle of water turned to wine, the glory of Jesus is displayed through His:
1. Divine Nature (vs. 3-4)
- Jesus: one person with two natures that are inseparably united – a fully functioning human nature (without sin) and a fully divine nature
- Jesus was fully man and fully God (cf. Col. 2:9)
- Faith is the only pathway to His favour (cf. Heb. 11:6)
Who do you trust during the crisis moments in your life? The glory of Jesus’ divine nature provides us with a High Priest who is able to empathize with us and through whom we can approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, receiving mercy and finding grace to help us in our time of need (cf. Heb. 4:15-16; 2:17).
2. Creating Power (vs. 6-10)
- “Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made” (Jn. 1:3; cf. Col. 1:16-17)
- In an instant, Jesus has the power to make something exist that did not exist before
- His glory as Creator was revealed as He exercised His rightful power over matter, using H2O to create wine
We serve a King who can intervene in our lives, at any time and according to His will, for His glory and for our good (cf. Rom. 8:28).
3. Ultimate Mission (vs. 11)
- “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him” (Jn. 3:17; cf. Lk. 19:10)
- One of the greatest miracles is the power to take a soul that is spiritually dead and make it alive (cf. Eph. 2:1-5)
- Through the gift of His Son, God provided an abundance of grace, enough for all who would believe (cf. Rom. 10:13)
What are you filling your life with? Is it religion, entertainment, earthly treasures and pursuits…or Jesus and His Gospel? Just like He did with the contents in those six water jars, Jesus’ ultimate mission is to “transform the contents” of all who believe in Him (Eze. 36:26-27; Jn. 7:38).
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”
