MARK: The Gospel for Stressful Times

Jan 26, 2020 | Rev. Dr. K. Rick Baker

Sin-sensitized Servanthood of Real Discipleship

Mark 9:30-50

Full Service

Fragile Egos or Fragile Faith—Which concerns Jesus most?

Status or Sinning—Which concerns you most?

Spiritual blindness lurks in the competitive human heart…puffed up ambition is not compatible with deny-self discipleship. Discipleship Jesus endorses…

1. Does not compete to be first (30-37)

  • Real Service or really Selfish?

  • Do you want ministry or recognition; God’s glory or yours?

  • Life is so much more expansive and non-burdensome when you stop fighting for what you mistakenly think you rightfully deserve—we are creatures completely dependent on what we don’t deserve, nothing more.

2. Does not compete to be exclusive (38-41)

  • Jealousy or Genuine Concern?

  • Is it more about our way, our approval, or right theology—if this is just about power and control, you need to know, compassion catches Jesus attention.

  • Do not stop!…Holy Spirit-affirming results, those not saying anything bad, or not against Jesus.

3. Competes vigorously against sin (42-50)

  • Focus on the real enemy to discipleship—SIN

  • Your fragile egos need to give way to concern about yours and other’s fragile faith and radicalize your efforts to eliminate sin from your life—collecting sin is the entrance pass to Hell.

  • You can count on purifying fire to be Jesus’ contribution to chasing sin and strengthening servanthood—real disciples don’t compete; they enjoy peaceful fellowship.
