Please the “Land-LORD”

Deuteronomy 11:2-32

Scripture: Deuteronomy 11:2-32

Moses is wrapping up his teachings about the general stipulations of the covenant the Israelites enjoy with the LORD, and he is determined to make sure they never forget this message: Living in obedience to the LORD is the key to enjoying His blessing. Not everybody listening gets the message the first time, and even if we do, we are prone to forget. That is why constant reminders of what God asks of His people were important for the Israelites back then and are equally as important for us now (cf. Phil. 3:1). What is He wanting us to remember today?

Three Urgent Reminders related to pleasing the “Land-LORD” and enjoying His blessing:

1. Remember what you already know about the “Land-LORD” (vs. 2-15)

- Our first-hand, past experiences with the Lord should greatly influence how we commit to living with Him in the future.

- We need to be alert, praying and asking the Holy Spirit to give us spiritual sight and understanding so that we don’t miss seeing and participating in the great things the Lord is doing in our city, region, country and world.

Have you seen the Lord do great things with your own eyes? Do we recognize that even His discipline is a great thing and that it is for our own good (cf. Heb.12:4-12)? Does our personal commitment to faithfully obeying the commands of the Lord reflect that we get the message?

2. Remember to model and teach the next generation how to please the “Land-LORD” (vs. 16-25)

- Do not be deceived. If we are not careful, even in seasons of blessing, we can be enticed to turn away from total allegiance to the Lord.

- The greatest deterrents from committing idolatry are holding fast, observing, and fixing God’s Word in our hearts and minds.

Are you living carefully or recklessly? Are you daily eating and being satisfied by meditating on the Word of God? Or are you spiritually starving yourself and, as a result, being enticed to give the best of your time talents and resources to other gods? How would your family answer that question based on what you model and teach them?

3. Remember the conditions of the “Land-LORD” ‘tenant covenant’ (vs. 26-32)

- Covenant blessings are always conditional, even though the covenant relationship itself is not.

- God mercifully tells us the results of sinful choices ahead of time. Therefore, we cannot deflect responsibility when we make the wrong choice, the result is on us.

Are you experiencing the Lord’s blessing through faithful, loving obedience? Or are you experiencing His discipline because of choosing instant gratification over God’s good plan for your life? When you are confronted with a choice between blessing or a curse, do you pause and think through the long-term ramifications of your decision?

Reminder – “Be sure that you obey all the decrees and laws I am setting before you today!”
