Building on God's Faithfulness
Keep Pressing On
Nehemiah 6-7
Big Idea: Nehemiah 6 shows the enemy’s persistent opposition, but God’s work is completed as Nehemiah refuses to give in. Nehemiah 7 shifts the focus to guarding the city and establishing the people, highlighting that God builds His work through a faithful community.
I. Intimidation Will Come (6:1–14)
Nehemiah’s enemy used four tactics:
- Distraction
- Slander
- Fear
- Deception
The First Attack — Distraction
Nehemiah 6:2
- Sanballat sends word to Nehemiah: “Come and let us meet together.”
- “They intended to do me harm.” 6:2
- Goal: pull Nehemiah away from the wall.
- Repeated the invitation four times (v.4).
The Second Attack — Slander
Nehemiah 6:5–7
- Open letter = public accusation
- It was unsealed, meaning anyone could read it
- It was designed to spread rumours quickly
- It created pressure from the outside, not just a private conversation
This wasn’t just communication—it was a strategy to damage Nehemiah’s reputation
The Third Attack — Fear
Nehemiah 6:9
Nehemiah reveals the real goal behind the accusations: “They all wanted to frighten us.”
The threat is not just external—it’s internal. The goal is to get inside Nehemiah’s heart and weaken his resolve.
Notice Nehemiah’s response:
- He doesn’t spiral
- He doesn’t overanalyze
- He doesn’t retreat
- He doesn’t crash out
He prays - “But now, O God, strengthen my hands.” (6:9)
The Fourth Attack — Spiritual Deception
Nehemiah 6:10–13
Manipulation dressed up to look spiritual.
- Hired to deceive
- Tries to promote allowances the scriptures forbid - Hide in the temple
Nehemiah sees through it—why? Because he knows the Word of God.
II. Completion Requires Perseverance (6:15–19)
“The wall was finished.” (6:15)
- Completed in fifty-two days
- God was sustaining the work
“For they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.” (6:19)
- The completion of the wall became a testimony to the power of God.
When God is at Work the Opposition Doesn’t Disappear
- Perseverance does not end when the project is complete
- Opposition continues
- The people of God must remain vigilant
III. God Secures What He Builds (7:1–4)
Nehemiah immediately shifts from construction to protection.
- Qualified men to lead (v.2)
- Intentional strategies to secure and to protect (v.3)
- Future vision of expansion (v.4)
Spiritual growth is not a reason to lower your guard—it is a reason to guard it even more.
IV. — God Builds His Work Through His People (7:5–73)
Divine direction - “Then my God put it into my heart…” (v.5)
Key Truth: God builds His work through generations of faithful people.
The Baton of God’s Work: Building of the Family of God
- The People (vv. 6–38) - Ordinary families and towns
- The Spiritual Leaders (vv. 39–45) - Priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers
- The Servants (vv. 46–60) - Temple servants and Solomon’s servants
- The Concern for True Identity (vv. 61–65) - Some couldn’t prove they belonged
- The Response (vv. 66–73) - The people give and settle
