Keep in Mind Who We Serve

Full Service

As we begin Passion Week together, we will use Matthew’s account to retrace the historic events of the first day of the week of Christ’s crucifixion, to remind ourselves of the greatness of who we serve. If we are not careful, familiarity can breed apathy!

Four identity markers that set our Saviour apart from all other kings:

1. Our Saviour is the Divine King (vs. 1-3)

- Eternally, Jesus is God (past, present, future) (cf. Php. 2:6-8; Jn. 1:1-4, 14)

- Our Divine King not only knows what we are experiencing, but He also orchestrates every detail of our lives according to His will (cf. Heb. 4:15; Prov. 16:9; 19:21)

God knows what is best for us. God knows what our future holds. God knows more things than we can comprehend.

2. Our Saviour is the Prophesied King (vs. 4-7)

- Jesus’ life was lived out according to the scriptures (cf. 1 Cor.15:3,4)

- We live with confident hope and anticipation knowing that His return will be according to the scriptures (cf. Acts 1:11)

Rejoice greatly, hold fast to the hope we have knowing our King, who is the fulfillment of all prophecies, is coming again, and we will be with Him forever.

3. Our Saviour is the Messianic King (vs. 8-11)

- In the confusion and chaos of this broken world, don’t lose sight of why King Jesus came – to seek and save the lost (cf. Lk. 19:10; Jn. 3:17)

- Through Jesus, our Messianic King, our three greatest enemies will be destroyed: Satan (cf. Rev. 20:1-10), sin (cf. Rom. 6:10; Rev. 21:27) and death (1 Cor. 15:26, 54-56)

Praise God, King Jesus has saved us! Now, let’s give ourselves fully to His mission and service.

4. Our Saviour is the Authoritative King (vs. 12-17)

- All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him (cf. Mt. 28:18)

- King Jesus sets the standard for the kind of worshippers the Father seeks (cf. Jn. 4:23)

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows (Gal. 6:7). Sow hypocrisy and you will reap the judgment of King Jesus.

Our saviour, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, “desires and deserves more than hallow worship and hypocritical religion.” (David Platt). On the journey let us keep in mind, who we serve and let us bear fruit in keeping with the values of His kingdom.
