Jesus Lifted Up

John 19:16-42

Full Service

(1) The Sacrificial love of Christ (16-30)

The historical evidence of the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth leads us all to ask this one question- Why is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ good news?

  • Paul shares, “For what I have received I pass on to you as first importance that Christ died for our sins, that he was buried and that he was raised from the dead.” (1 Cor. 15:3-4)
  • The word "for" (huper in Greek) can either mean; "for the benefit of" or "because of."

2) The completion of God’s plan (31-37)

  • The completion of God’s plan: Our benefit
  • The gift of reconciliation is the direct implication of the completion of God’s plan of salvation through the cross of Christ to our benefit.
  • To our benefit, the completion of God’s plan, through the cross of Calvary is:
    • God not counting people’s sins against them.
    • God giving his people the ability to grant grace, mercy, and forgiveness to others- we now have the gift of reconciliation,
    • God considers us ambassadors- agents who speak on behalf of God and set the example in faith, love, forgiveness, mercy, grace, and justice.
    • God commissions us to preach the gospel of the cross- God made him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
  • “It is finished” is declared the completion of God’s plan for mankind- this is good news.

(3) The response of discipleship (38-42)

  • Because of the sacrifice of Christ, we can live in harmony with God and with each other- he has removed the dividing wall of hostility between God and us.
  • Because of the completion of God's plan, we can begin learning to obey Christ in all areas of our lives.
  • Because of Christ's perfect life and horrendous death, we can say the crucifixion of Christ is good news because I am free from sin and alive to what my saviour has called me to do: bring glory and honour to God through obedience to his word.

But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:31
