Experiencing God

John 16:16-33

Full Service

The unimaginable, indescribable is soon to be the every day experience of the common disciple...

Imagine living in a world where what you mean by “knowing God” is the fantasy of some sense of good luck or at best is to you an inaccessible force or power you hope matters somehow, and where the best form of love you ever experience is really just lust, the best of joy is what can be had in entertainment, and the only peace you get is when you are sedated with some sort of substance. THAT’S THE DAILY EXISTENCE OF MOST OF HUMANITY—what most people make do with—lust, entertainment, sedation, are the replacement religious experience of the first world majority. How they experience life—that’s the lot of humanity, unable in its imperfect darkness to have access to God. the daily tragedy of SEPARATED FROM GOD.

The purpose of creating humanity at all was that God might dwell with them—a theme (THE theme) that runs throughout the
Scriptures—it is to this purpose that the events of God unfold. From God in the Garden walking with man at creation (Gen. 3:8f) –the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (Jn. 1:14)—“now” the dwelling of God is with man (Rev. 21:3)—GOD MADE PEOPLE TO DWELL WITH THEM.

The problem is that a perfect God cannot risk His perfection by being intimately connected to what is imperfect—holiness cannot be tainted with unholiness and remain holy!

What Jesus is about to do and about to explain is how God is going to MAKE PEOPLE ABLE TO DWELL WITH—God will become ACCESSIBLE to you!

For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified (being sanctified) (Heb. 10:14).

If all you’ve ever known is god, as a good luck force, and love as lust, only joy you have is the moments entertainment brings, and you require substances to sedate you for peace—Jesus has done something that will completely reshape your life experience if you receive Him...

What Jesus introduces as the way to this abundant living is not actually understandable to the disciples and quite mysterious...TEXT—in a little while you will see me no more...and then in a little while you will see me”

—it’s what happens in between those little whiles that changes their lives, your lives, and my life, and anyone else who cares to get in on what Jesus has done, forever

“you will weep and mourn, the world will rejoice”, it will be like the emotions of childbirth (Is. 26:16-31—17,20) “then you will rejoice”...IN THAT DAY...everything will change for you.

They simply have no real time category for what the readers already know...crucifixion, burial, resurrection, ascension...Here’s what you will get then...

1. Untouchable joy (22)

2. Settled understanding (23)

3. Effective prayer (23-24)

4. Direct accessibility (25-27)

Because... (28)
The person and work of Christ make it possible for God/man to dwell intimately together.

Beware—
of presumptuously launching forth in your own flesh and strength ... “now we can see and believe!

So that in times of trials and tribulation...(through “remaining” in Christ through the H.S.)

- Peace—comes from confidence in the outcome

- Courage—to face very hard things
